Supermetrics Alternative That Makes The Difference in 2022

If you export data from dozens of sources, such as Facebook Ads, Google Analytics, and so on, to your spreadsheet on a recurring basis, Supermetrics is probably the best you can have.

At the same time, if your pipeline only consists of a few sources, are you ready to pay more than $100 per month? Very unlikely. So, the right decision would be to find a Supermetrics alternative that will provide similar functionality but for less money. And there is already an option you can rely on.

Meet Coupler.io, an alternative to Supermetrics

Coupler.io is a tool to pull data from multiple sources to one of three destinations: Google Sheets, Excel, and BigQuery. It allows users to automate data load pipelines on a custom schedule, which is quite beneficial for reporting, data sharing, backup copies, and other purposes.

With Coupler.io, you can load data from 15+ sources, including Facebook Ads, Shopify, Pipedrive, HubSpot, Airtable, and others.

The frequency of data exports can be set up to every 15 minutes. Its pricing depends on the amount of data you export and the frequency of data refreshing. Coupler.io provides a 14-day trial and a free forever plan!

The tool has the same UI for all destinations supported. If this sounds appealing to you, then check out the recap of the comparison between Supermetrics and Coupler.io in the table below.

Supermetrics lost 9-5 to Coupler.io?! Well, the major advantage of Supermetrics is the number of sources and destinations supported. Meanwhile, Coupler.io wins in terms of pricing, data refresh, and user-friendliness. Let’s explore this in detail below.

Benefits you get with Supermetrics or Coupler.io

Supermetrics benefits

Almost 80 data sources: In Supermetrics, they are called data source connectors, and there are almost 80 of them. You can load data from Ahrefs, LinkedIn Ads, Shopify, etc. For some sources that are under development, such as Salesforce, you can request early access.

Although the number of sources is impressive, there is one huge drawback. You get a limited number of sources for your subscription plan unless it’s Super or Enterprise. The latter gives you access to premium data sources, such as AdRoll, Google Ad Manager, and others.

11 destinations: Supermetrics supports three main destinations: Google Sheets, Excel, and Data Studio. Other options, such as BigQuery, Amazon S3, and others, are available by request. This means that you’ll need to send your requirements or questions to the Supermetrics sales team to get a quote for the chosen destination. As Data Studio can work with a spreadsheet as a data source, we can simplify things and tell that you are paying for two destinations only.

Report templates: Supermetrics offers a gallery of marketing reporting templates for its core destinations: Google Sheets, Data Studio, and Excel. They are absolutely free for Supermetrics users and let you optimize your reporting. Some templates are tailored for specific sources, while others can be used for the data exported from different sources.

Let’s see what Coupler.io can offer as a counter to this.

Coupler.io benefits

Unlimited integrations for all plans: With any subscription plan you choose, even the free one, you get access to all sources and destinations. You can shuffle them easily without any limitations in your choice. The limits you have are related to the number of data refreshes and data volume you export.

For example, Shopify to BigQuery is available without any additional requests or payments. In Supermetrics, you can use this source in the Super plan or add it additionally in cheaper plans. And the BigQuery destination is available upon request.

Pricing based on data volume and refresh frequency: You do not pay for sources or destinations. You pay for the maximum number of manual and automatic runs per month and the maximum number of rows you can pull from your sources. Premium plans also allow you to benefit from the reduced frequency of automatic data refresh: every 15 and 30 minutes.

Unlimited users: There is no limit to the number of users you can add to your Coupler.io account.

In Supermetrics, the user management is quite intricate because multiple users are only available for Super and Enterprise plans. However, you can create teams and add members who won’t have access to the Supermetrics license.

Free forever plan: Free and Forever are two words that can be used together in Coupler.io, but not in Supermetrics. If the data you export from your sources is not that large, less than 1,000 rows, then you can go with the free forever plan provided by Coupler.io. It allows you to export these 1,000 rows 100 times per month, so, in total, you’ll have 100,000 exported rows for a month.

Web app: Coupler.io rests on the web app, where you can set up connections between all sources and destinations.

Optionally, you can use the add-on for Google Sheets to manage the setup from the spreadsheet. However, the web app seems to be the most convenient way to manage your integrations or queries. From it, you can easily toss sources and destinations for your importers.

In Supermetrics, you have to install the add-on for Google Sheets. If you want to load data to Excel, then you’ll need to install the add-in. For Data Studio as the destination, you won’t have to install anything – the connector configuration will be carried out in the browser. Besides, for managing queries in Supermetrics for Google Sheets, you need to manipulate in a separate tab called Supermetrics Queries.

For example, to remove a query, you need to delete its row. In general, it’s far more convenient to have all options in one place, just like Coupler.io allows you to.

It feels that your interest in Coupler.io is growing. Then let’s check out this tool in action.

Coupler.io integration setup flow

You can sign up to Coupler.io with your Google or Microsoft account, so no additional installation is needed.

However, if you wish, you can install the Coupler.io add-on for Google Sheets and work with the configuration right from your spreadsheet.

Unlike Supermetrics, where you create queries, in Coupler.io, you work with importers. An importer is an integration between a source and a destination.

Click the + Add new importer button, name your importer, and complete the setup:

Source

  • Select a source application from the drop-down list of options, such as Shopify, Google Sheets, CSV, BigQuery, etc. Then you’ll need to connect to the source.
  • Configure the basic and optional parameters. They vary depending on the chosen source application. For example, for Xero, you need to select a data entity; for Google Sheets, you’ll need to choose a spreadsheet and a sheet.

Destination

  • Select a destination application from the drop-down list of options: Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, or BigQuery. Then you’ll need to connect to the chosen destination.
  • Select a file and a sheet where to load data. This works for Google Sheets and Excel, whereas for BigQuery, you’ll need to enter the name of a dataset and a table.
  • Optionally, you can
    • Specify the first cell for the exported dataset.
    • Select the import mode, replace, or append.
    • Add a column with the date and time of the last update.

Configuration of these two steps is enough if you want to export data one time. To automate exports on a schedule, toggle on the Automatic data refresh and customize the frequency for your updates.

Here is an example of the Shopify to Google Sheets integration:

3 shopify integration

After each import, you can go from the web app to your Google Sheets or Excel spreadsheet, or BigQuery table. For this, there is a View Results button.

Also, you can easily copy your importers. This is very useful for loading different data entities or data from multiple sources into one spreadsheet.

Supermetrics vs. Coupler.io features

Although Coupler.io looks better in terms of pricing and usability, it lacks some features that Supermetrics users have already gotten used to, for example, sending updated reports via email. So, let’s see what features both Supermetrics and its alternative can offer.

Supermetrics features

Scheduled report updates via email: In Supermetrics, you can not only set up an automatic refresh of your queries, but also get the updated reports to your inbox.

5 scheduled emails

Optionally, you can get an email notification if any of your scheduled queries fail to complete.

Filters: Supermetrics allows you to filter the end results of your query. Basically, you can choose a field, a logical operator (EQUALS, CONTAINS, etc.), and a value to filter by.

Highlighting: You can highlight the highest or lowest values with green and red colors, as well as apply the scale – red-white-green or red-yellow-green. Of course, you can do all of that in the destination using, for example, conditional formatting in Google Sheets. But, in general, it is more convenient to do that within the app interface.

Coupler.io features

More frequent data refreshing: Supermetrics provides schedule refresh for their queries. Coupler.io, however, allows you to schedule more frequent data updates every 30 or even 15 minutes!

Import mode: Coupler.io provides two options for your data import: append and replace. When the replace mode is on, the entire dataset from the source will be loaded with every import and replace existing data. With the append mode, the tool loads the entire dataset as well, but places it below the previously imported rows.

Combine sheets into one master view: When getting data from Google Sheets or Excel, you can select multiple sheets to be merged into one. This works well for sheets that have the same structure when you need to combine data into a master view.

It’s time to make a decision, and the following sections will definitely help you do this effectively.

Coupler.io vs. Supermetrics pricing

Both tools offer a 14-day trial period, so you can check them out. Meanwhile, Coupler.io provides a ‘Free forever’ plan that gives you:

  • Unlimited access to all sources and destinations
  • 100 free manual and automatic runs per month
  • Unlimited users

If you need more, check out Coupler.io pricing that starts at $19/month annually or $24/month. The most expensive plan, Business, costs $79/month annually or $99/month.

8 Coupler.io pricing.

Supermetrics does not look preferable because its pricing starts with a single connector to Data Studio for $89! For Google Sheets, you get 10 data sources for $119, as the cheapest plan.

6 supermetrics pricing

The main drawback here is that you get a fixed set of sources, so you can’t customize it. But you can add one more data source at $19/month 😉

And one more thing – no monthly billing is supported at Supermetrics.

The Verdict – Supermetrics or Coupler.io with their pros and cons

Haven’t you already tried out Coupler.io? Then go ahead! It has a number of pros you should consider:

  • Unlimited sources for all plans
  • All destinations are available
  • Free forever plan
  • Unlimited users
  • Automatic data refreshing every 30 and 15 minutes
  • One web app for all destinations

As for the cons, filtering is only available for specific sources, and less than 20 data sources are currently supported.

Supermetrics, in turn, provides the following list of advantages:

  • Many data sources are supported
  • Scheduled updates via email
  • Free reporting templates and dashboards
  • Filtering options

But the list of cons is rather long:

  • Unlimited sources are not available
  • Pricing depends on the destination
  • Fixed set of sources by plans
  • No single web app for all destinations

So, Coupler.io seems to be a worthy alternative to Supermetrics if the required data sources are supported. If you haven’t found the source you need, please fill out this form, and let us know which apps you’d like to add to our list of sources. Good luck with your data!
